In the UK, there are three main levels of postgraduate study: postgraduate certificates and diplomas, master's degrees and doctorates. Most of them take only one academic year to complete, compared to two years in many other countries. Advanced Professional diplomas or certificates are offered in a huge variety of subjects, from education to management to network engineering. These are often accepted as professional qualifications in their field. It is often similar to a master's, the only difference being that it doesn't require you to write a dissertation.
At some institutions, you might be asked to register for advanced Professional diploma as the first stage of a master's programmer, and some diploma courses enable you to transfer to a master's when you've completed them.
